Chinese Supreme Court Condemns Brutal Killing of Judge

The legal community in China is currently facing some horror and introspection as they deal with the death of the Beijing judge who was gunned down late last week. The shooting is the latest slaying against someone from the profession. This has no doubt added to the morale issues they are already facing.

As reported by CRI, the Supreme Court in China has expressed a strong condemnation on the brutal killing of Beijing Judge Ma Caiyun. Published on RTHK, the 38-year-old judge was shot to death by two attackers last Friday, which also led to the injury of Ma's husband, as well as the death of another individual.

The publication has revealed that the other victim was the ex-wife of one of the attackers who had a pending post-divorce property settlement case which was being overheard by Ma. After the incident, the two attackers killed themselves.

On Monday, a spokesman for the Supreme People's Court, Sun Jungong, spoke to the public to express condolences to the deceased judge as well as the other victims. Jungong shared that the incident has shocked them all, especially since the judge was an excellent one. The Wall Street Journal reported that through this statement, the Supreme People's Court announced its strong condemnation of the criminal act. Additionally, the spokesman vowed a resolute fight against this type of criminal act as stipulated by the law.

Jungong shared that they will "crack down on law-violating and criminal acts of attacking and injuring judges and their family members abiding by law, and severely punish the criminal acts of infringing on people's rights to life and health." The spokesman shared that they will be taking "practical and effective measures" so they can safeguard personal safety of each judge and their family members.

The Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the Community Party of China Central Committee has been reported to release a regulation which will safeguard judicial staff along with their family members. According to the regulation, anyone who seeks revenge through coercion, slander, or false testimony will be given a corresponding punishment and charge. In high-risk cases much like a terrorism or organized crime, the regulation stipulates that anonymity and court security guards shall be provided.
