Motorola Releases Android 6.0 Marshmallow Soak Test for DROID Turbo 2; Final Version Scheduled on March

By

While Motorola quickly released the Android Lollipop firmware update to its handsets like DROID Turbo, it has been slow in seeding the Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware to its patrons' devices. However, recent reports confirmed that the Marshmallow soak test has been rolled out for DROID Turbo 2 units.

According to MobiPicker, the Motorola DROID Turbo 2 Marshmallow update soak test will work for selected users who signed up on Motorola's feedback network. The update is said to be sent out to them some days before the public roll-out. This soak test is done to catch any bugs, issues or performance problems that might have been missed out by the developers. It is the final software that will be released to all the DROID Turbo 2 users once the soak test is completed.

For the users who have been selected for the DROID Turbo 2 Marshmallow soak test, they will receive notifications for downloading two OTA updates. Once both the OTAs are installed, the firmware version on the DROID Turbo 2 will bump up to 24.14.10. A lot of owners have already received the Android 6.0 Marshmallow soak test OTA and are testing it out.

Moreover, Android Police noted that there probably isn't much of interest beyond the upgrade to Android 6.0. Motorola software tends to be quite close to stock Android, save for a few voice and UI tweaks. But it would be interesting to see anything beyond AOSP changes and bug fixes inside. The download is 1.1GB, and the Android security patch is labeled as "March 1st."

For reference, Neurogadget cited some of the features and specs of DROID Turbo 2. This handset was released in October 2015 as a modified version of the Moto X. It features a smaller shatterproof screen of 5.4-inch, built from five layers of protection; exterior protective lens, interior lens, a dual-touch layer, the AMOLED display and an aluminum backing. This handset is armed with a powerful processor, Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core clocked at 2GHz, which is coupled with an Adreno 430 GOU and 3GB of RAM.

The DROID Turbo 2 arrived in two variants of internal memories, 32GB and 64GB, that can be further expanded up to 200GB. As for the cameras, it is armed with 21 MP that features f/2.0 optics, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash on the rear side while a 5 MP with f/2.0 optics and LED flash is placed on the front side. It is powered by a 3760mAh battery capacity which Motorola claimed can provide 48 hours of continuous talk time over 3G.

The soak test is expected to go out in two to six weeks before the public release, excluding any major problems with the initial test. This suggests that the Motorola DROID Turbo 2 would officially receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware sometime on March or early April.
