Train Derailment in Spain Kills At Least 35 People; Scores of Injuries in the Northwest Region of Country (Video)

Spanish authorities said the railway company Renfe confirmed that a train has derailed in northwestern Spain, killing at least 35 people have died after train derailment, Reuters reported. The Spanish railway company Renfe confirmed that the train fell off the tracks near the city of Santiago de Compostela in the Galicia region, which is in the nortwest of the country.

The railwat company said the train carried more than 200 passengers, and was on the express route between Madrid and Ferrol on the Galician coast, news reports said. According to passenger accounts given to La Voz de Galicia, the train, which held 225 passengers, was traveling at high speed around a curve when one car jumped its tracks, surging beyond the slope that separates other tracks, the Huffington Post reported. Passengers also noted there was not any explosion after it derailed.

Spanish state television showed images of the accident on high-speed tracks near the city's train station, south of El Ferrol.

Officials at the Interior Ministry or with Renfe and the Adif rail infrastructure authority did not immediately answer telephone calls or return messages seeking more information about the accident.
