Syfy’s new series, The Magicians, has been officially renewed for a second season -- the cable network has announced Monday.

As reported by Deadline, the series was granted a 13-episode second run after airing its third episode. The new bunch of episodes will premiere in 2017.

The Magicians was well-received by critics when it premiered last December. The first three episodes averaged strong with a total of 1.7 million viewers each week among adults 18-49.

E! Online released the statement of network boss Dave Howe in a report. He said:

"Thanks to an extraordinarily gifted creative team of executive producers and our partners at Universal Cable Productions, The Magicians has become a buzzed-about hit, enchanting fans of the novels as well as attracting new and younger audiences to Syfy”.

The Magicians is based on the fantasy novels penned by Lev Grossman. It follows a group of twenty-somethings who learn magic and its dark consequences at Brakesbill College for Medical Pedagogy.

The one hour drama, which hails from John McNamara and Sera Gamble, stars Jason Raplh, Stella Mave, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta and Summer Bashil.

According to Variety, Syfy also recently renewed scifi drama The Expanse for a second season. Meanwhile, time-travel saga 12 Monkeys will premiere its sophomore run on April 18.

The cable network is also set to launch Hunters, a series from The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, on April 11, and Incorporated which is a show from Matt Damon, Ben Affleck this coming fall.

As to what happens next week, Spoilers Guide shared that viewers will find the students dealing with some personal matters – a storyline which will keep them from being focused on the upcoming Welter’s Tournament.

Catch new episodes of The Magicians every Mondays at 9 p.m. on Syfy.
