London Olympics 2012. - Swiss Football Player Expelled From Games

By

Swiss football Michel Morganella has been expelled from the Olympics after tweeting offensive comments about the South Korean team, who defeated the Swiss team in a 2-1 score.

Morganella's tweet read, "I Punch you South Koreans, go burn...bunch of mongoloids," as reported by ESPN.

The Swiss Team Chief, Gian Gilli told Yahoo News, "As a member of the Swiss Olympic mission he gravely discriminated, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team and the South Korean people."

One can't help but wonder did the 23-year-old player not learn anything from last week's incident where Greece's triple player was banned from the game for - posting offensive racist comments about African immigrants in Greece. Voula Pappachristou was barred from the games by the Hellenic Olympic Committee removed the athlete from the team after her tweet, "With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!" (Twitter profile @papaxristoutj) garnered massive derision from the public on and off the internet alike. But Unlike Morganella, Pappachristou was barred before she even set foot on London soil.

Morganella released a statement accepting the consequences of his actions and also apologizing to the South Korean Team. The football player said, "I made a huge mistake after the disappointing result. I wish to apologize to the people in South Korea and their team, but also to the Swiss delegation and Swiss football in general. I obviously accept the consequences for my actions, "according to Yahoo News.

Gilli also ESPN reporters that there was "no alternative" for the actions taken against Morganella, he also added "We would like to apologize, especially to the South Korea National Olympic Committee and the South Korea Football Association for the behavior of the player," as reported by ESPN.

Hopefully this incidence will send a clear message that athletes need to be very careful about what they publish on their social media sites.
