Minnesota Shooting: 10-Year-Old Killed in Random Act in Oakdale Suburb, Suspect in Custody

By

A gunman in a suburban Minnesota neighborhood, who began firing at vehicles, which ultimately killed a 10-year old and injured two others, left a community stunned Monday night, according to the Associated Press.

The cascade of bullets also wounded the boy's mother, and another woman also was hurt, the AP reported.

The unidentified 33-year-old gunman was taken into custody as police begin looking for a motive. He reportedly lives in the neighborhood. A woman in another car was struck and wounded in the hand. All indications appear that the shootings were completely random.

The shootings occurred in the suburban, Oakdale community, near a Rainbow Foods store. According to the local KMSP network, the gunfire erupted at about 6:10 p.m. on Monday.

"It appears to be entirely random," Oakdale Police Chief Bill Sullivan told the AP. "At this time it appears he was randomly shooting at vehicles."

The boy died and his mother was wounded in the arm.

Authorities believe there are no other suspects and there is no immediate danger to the public, Sullivan said. However Oakdale Mayor Carmen Sarrack did not mince words in his reaction to incident.

"It's sick. What can you say when a 9-year-old or 10-year-old is killed?" he said. "People are devastated that this could happen in our city."

Both women are expected to recover, Sullivan said.
