Director James Cameron is ready to revive his 2009 hit movie "Avatar" by releasing new details on the much-awaited sequel "Avatar 2". According to the director, the original film, which scored $2.8 billion dollars in global box office sales, will be followed by three more movies.

Cameron reportedly dished out that "Avatar 2" will most likely come out on the third week of December in 2017. "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4" will hit the big screen in 2018 and 2019 respectively, Movie New Guide reported.

Reports say he is planning to film the three sequels consecutively, meaning shooting for all three films will run straight through. The reason behind this is to maintain the lengthy meta-narrative and aesthetic of the film. 

While details about the plots for the upcoming "Avatar" films have been largely kept under the wraps, Cameron teased that a new group of species will be featured in the sequels.

"It's been about a two-year task. [We've finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see," Cameron said in an interview. He added that while the story is still being written, the process is nearly completed.

James Cameron also admitted that working on the sequel is a continuous challenge he works every day to overcome.   

"Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time."

Cameron aims to begin filming for "Avatar 2" early this year.

Meanwhile, most of the characters in the first movie will reprise their roles, including the main protagonists Jack Sully, played by Sam Worthington, and Neytiri, portrayed by Zoe Saldana.

Dr. Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Colonel Miles Quatrich (Stephen Lang), who both died in the original film, will also make a comeback in "Avatar 2". As to how their resurrection will pan out, Cameron stated that "science fiction characters do not really die."

According to Vine Report, the rumored plot suggests that the story will take a more emotional turn compared to the fast-paced, high-action sequencing of the first "Avatar" movie.

In a previous interview, Zoe Saldana reportedly hinted that a huge war between the humans and the Na'vi community will keep Jack Sully and Neytiri apart.

20^th Century Fox initially intended to release "Avatar 2" in Christmas this year, but Cameron requested to postpone the date as he will not be able to meet their deadline, which was reportedly due to the lack of technology available to help interpret and realize Cameron's vision for the film.
