Listeria panic forces Canadian food inspectors to ban US Sweet 2 Eat fruit products

By

Another US food company has been banned by a food regulator over concerns regarding possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination in its food products. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the whole peaches, plums, nectarines and pluots that are being sold under the Sweet 2 Eat brand are being recalled by Wawona Packing Company of California. The products are also being labeled under the Wawona or Harvest Sweet brands, The Star reported.

"Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. Consumers who are unsure whether they have the affected products are advised to check with their retailer or supplier. Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die," the Canadian Food Inspection Agency had said on its website.

Although there have been no known reports of people getting sick by eating the fruit products under the brands mentioned, the regulator is urging to consumers to throw out the fruit products or return it to the stores where they have purchased their items.

Concerns over Listeria infection has already resulted in a lawsuit, particularly that of a cancer patient in the US, who sued Trader Joe's for the sale of its Egg White Salad with Chives at one of its Northbrook branches. According to plaintiff Vladimir Sokhatskiy, his oncologist found out that he had a bacterial infection after the patient decided to get tested after succumbing to fever and a headache. Ahead of the lawsuit, the supplier of the salad, Lansal Inc, has recalled the said product on June 8 due to potential Listeria contamination.
