Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez arraigned in Boston double-murder

By

The Washington Post reported that former National Football League star Aaron Fernandez has been forally indicted on charges that he killed two men in Boston in 2012. The charges stemmed from what initially appeared to be a cold-case . The newspaper said that the case was revived after investigators have linked the ex-New England Patriots tight end's purported involvement in another killing. Hernandez was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed assault with intent to murder and an additional count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors have said that the former athlete was the shooter in a late-night drive-by shooting, which caused the deaths of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado after leaving a popular nightclub in Boston. The latest charges reportedly came in with a trove of court documents that potentially linked him to several other shootings in the last few years. The documents had also pictured Fernandez, a once-celebrated athlete, as an increasing violent man.

"Mr. Abreu and Mr. Furtado were ambushed and executed as they drove home. For us, this case was not about Aaron Hernandez. This case was about two victims, who were stalked, ambushed, and senselessly murdered on the streets of the city they called home. Aaron Hernandez then fired a .38 caliber revolver multiple times from the driver's side of his vehicle into the passenger side of the victims' vehicle," Suffolk County district attorney Dan Conley had said.

Hernandez is behind bars for being accused of shooting another man near his mansion to death. Semiprofessional football player Odin Lloyd, whose body was found last June, had cost Hernandez a first-degree murder charge. Days following his arrest for the alleged murder of Lloyd, the Patriots dropped the once-promising football star from its roster and from the team's website.
