Three siblings from Illinois faced the law and received significant sentences. Their crimes spanned years. These crimes included kidnapping and forced labor. Domingo Francisco-Juan is 44 years old. He received a life sentence. His crimes were kidnapping, forced labor, and conspiracy. This sentence is historic. It is the first of its kind in over a decade. This is under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. Francisco-Juan was also ordered to pay restitution. He must pay $50,000 to a victim.
Lorenza Domingo-Castaneda is 35 years old. She was also sentenced. Her sentence was 20 years. Her crimes were forced labor and conspiracy. Part of her sentence includes restitution. She must pay over $80,000. This amount will go to three victims.

How Severe are the Crimes and Punishments?
The third member of the family, Catarina Domingo-Juan, 41 years old, received a sentence of 240 months in prison on December 18, 2023. Her punishment for the forced labor and conspiracy was coupled with a similar restitution requirement, amounting to over $80,000 for three victims. The sentences underscore the severity with which the justice system views crimes of forced labor, particularly when they involve minors and vulnerable individuals.
All rescuers are nationals of Guatemala and have orchestrated their manipulative scheme across international borders. The abuse they inflicted on their victims was both physical and sexual.

Survivors Speak Out Against Abusers

Upon arrival in the United States, the minor was isolated from her family. She was coerced into working ceaselessly for the defendants' benefit. This included domestic service and outside work, with earnings pocketed by the perpetrators.
Another minor and an adult victim were exploited similarly between December 2018 and March 2021. They, too, were promised a better life and forced into domestic servitude and labor in local businesses.
