Trump Denies Allegations in E. Jean Carroll Case, Defamation Trial Continues

By

Former President Donald Trump finds himself again in a legal maelstrom. The stage? The courtroom where a defamation trial is underway, where Trump stands accused by an established writer, E. Jean Carroll, who previously accused him of sexual assault. Trump vehemently denied the allegations already made against him, both from his position outside the courthouse on Thursday and the witness stand.'

What Happened in the Courtroom?

Trump's appearance on the witness stand was brief - his testimony lasting less than three minutes. He was bound by the presiding Judge Lewis A. Kaplan's limitations, confining his answers to straightforward questions like whether his negative statements about Carroll were reactive to her accusations and whether no harm was intended. Despite these restraints, Trump pushed the boundaries with his remarks.

"I considered what she said a false accusation," Trump stated in court, signaling his intense desire to "defend myself, my family and the presidency." However, these comments were deemed inappropriate and signaled for disregard by the judge, leading an exasperated Trump to conclude, "This is not America."

One Defamation Trial Ends, Another Begins

Trump's no-show at last year's trial, connected to the same allegations, did not stop a separate jury from ruling he had sexually abused Carroll and made defamatory comments concerning her. These findings resulted in a $5 million damages award for Carroll. On trial now is the additional compensation Trump may be required to remit for statements made in 2019, specifically during his presidency. Carroll is seeking a minimum of a further $10 million.

The previous trial's verdicts have boxed Trump into a corner. The initial jury's conclusions prevent him from offering testimony that seeks to deny or undermine the sexual abuse allegations further.

When Did The Alleged Incident Occur?

In the spring of 1996, Carroll claims she had a chance encounter with Trump that quickly turned sour. Carroll was an Elle magazine advice columnist then and had her own TV show, while Trump was a successful real estate developer. The two crossed paths at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury department store near Trump Tower, where they ended up in a dressing room on the pretense of trying on lingerie as a joke. Carroll holds that she believed it would be a humorous tale, but the situation escalated, resulting in Trump forcibly imposing himself on her.

The earlier trial's jury did find that she was sexually abused but dismissed her claim that she was the victim of rape.

After bringing forward her account of the alleged incident, Carroll states that her reputation was tarnished.
