Niger extradition sends Gaddafi's son to Tripoli prison for embezzlement, threat charges

By

The Guardian said in a report that the Libyan government announced on Thursday that it currently has Muammar Gaddafi's son Saadi in a Tripoli prison. Saadi was said to have been in the possession of the Libyan government after African government of Niger had extradited the former professional football player and businessman to face embezzlement and armed intimidation charges filed against him during his post as head of the the Libyan Football Federation. It has been noted that Libya has been wanting to get Saadi extradited after his father was toppled courtesy of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization-supported uprising in 2011.

The extradition of Saadi was confirmed by Libya by showing photos of him wearing a blue prison uniform and branding him as a criminal in its official statement, Several news websites of the country also ran photos of him with his hair shaven in prison.

Cabinet Ali Zeidan of the Libyan prime minister said in the statement, "The Libyan government received today Saadi Gaddafi and he arrived in Tripoli."

According to the Libyan government's statement, Gaddafi is being held by judiciary police forces and that it would be observing international justice standards for prisoners when treating the prisoner. However, he was not wanted in the International Criminal Court unlike his father and more notorious brother, Saif al-Islam.

On the other hand, the UK newspaper said Saif al-Islam has been indicted by the ICC for purported crimes made to humanity. Saadi's brother is currently detained by a militia in western Libya where he is reportedly being tried for several charges.

The Guardian said Saif al-Islam was caught by western Zintan regional fighters a month after Muammar was captured and beaten by a raging mob in 2011. The militia allegedly did not want to comply with the Libyan government's order to send him to prison in the capital.
