If you're a gamer, whether it be PC, console, handheld/portable or what have you, you've definitely heard of the name Microsoft. In fact, even if you aren't into gaming as much as other people or if you're just a casual guy working on computers, the chances of you not hearing this name must be very small. Microsoft is responsible for a lot of things, including one of the most successful operating systems of all time, "Windows". From Windows 95 all the way to Windows 10, the name Microsoft rings loud and clear to gamers and non-gamers alike, but one other thing they are very popular for is the creation of the Xbox, the Xbox 360, and for the more recent and popular era of gaming, the Xbox One.
Game Spot, one of the leading sources that followed the evolution of not just the Xbox One but other gaming consoles as well, claimed that while there was nothing new to share about their sales, they would focus instead on engagement, which according to them was their "metric of success". While the Xbox One did have a rivalry and lost against Sony's PS4 upon release, the second half of 2016 was their time to shine. With the announcement of Xbox One S at last year's E3, fans of the console continued to increase as the Xbox One delivered both on performance and game lineup.
One may wonder, however, as to why their sales would even come into question. According to VG 24/7, Microsoft had stopped reporting on their Xbox unit sales. This, by a long shot, does not mean they had given up, and before Sony took back the leading sales in November and December, Xbox One was ruling the charts from July through October. Perhaps one of the reasons is their widely popular online service known as Xbox Live, which, according to the numbers, increased due to the upgrading from Xbox 360 consoles to Xbox One consoles. The total worldwide market for video games comes to a worth of around $91 billion, and as technology continues to increase and upgrade itself, video games and gamers alike are seeing clear skies ahead.
