Michigan: A Safer Place for Dogs

It is difficult to find a place where your pets can be safe. A lot of places, whether in America or otherwise, will often not have anything else protecting your pets from dangers both inside the home and outside the home. Just like the normal, innocent civilians that you encounter every day, pets, dogs especially, are subject to face many of the similar dangers. However, things appear to be showing a different turn of events in Michigan, where a new law that was recently released offers a safer environment for dogs.

According to Dog Couture Country, a package of bills was passed with the intention of keeping pets away from from known animal abusers. This package of bills was passed and signed into law by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley which also received strong bipartisan support when passing the Legislature in December.

Two of the bills that were passed, HBs 4353 and 4355, were sponsored by Reps. Harvey Satana and Paul Muxlow, as reported by CBS Detroit. These two laws now give animal shelters the opportunity to check a potential adopter's criminal background by using the Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT). With this tool, the animal shelters have the ability to help determine an adopter has any criminal history of animal abuse.

Muxlow, one of the representatives that sponsored HBs 4353 and 4355, stated, "it's time for Michigan to take a strong stand against crimes related to animal abuse, neglect and cruelty, and that this new law is a step in the right direction". The bills continue to improve the safety of dogs by adding more requirements to improve the quality and health of dogs.

PAs 392 and 393 now establish a regulatory program for large-scale dog breeder kennels. With the new bills added to the Legislation, Michigan is slowly turning into a safer and more reliable environment for dogs who and dog owners looking for a new home.
