'Splinter Cell' may be greenlit for a sequel ahead of its scheduled release for 2017. The film will form part of shared movie deal between New Regency and Taiwanese co-financier Catchplay. Tom Hardy will play the lead protagonist Sam Fisher, a character first introduced in the original video games.

According to Den of Geek, the upcoming live-action adaptation for Ubisoft award-winning stealth video game series may already be getting a sequel ahead of its planned theatrical release. New Regency may be tapping the film as part of a planned shared franchise with another Ubisoft adaptation 'Assassin's Creed'.

Daphne Young, CEO of Catchplay, revealed that they are already eyeing follow-ups for their upcoming adaptations. Cacthplay is the Taiwanese film distributor and co-financier for both Ubisoft films. Young said, "They are both adaptations of successful Ubisoft games and would make ideal sequels."

According to Variety, the company is backed by Cher Wang, who is also the founder and chairperson for smartphone manufacturer HTC. Catchplay also sealed a deal with New Regency for Alejandro G. Innaritu's 'The Revenant', which earned multiple accolades including several Academy Award wins.

The upcoming film will feature Oscar-winner Tom Hardy as the main protagonist Sam Fisher, a player character created by JT Petty and designed by Martin Caya. Hardy is best known for his work on several blockbuster films such as 'The Revenant', 'Mad Max: Fury Road', 'Inception' and 'The Dark Knight Rises'.

Hardy's character is portrayed in the original video game series as a former Navy Seal operator and CIA clandestine officer who carries out covert missions under a top-secret initiative within the National Security Agency. Sam Fisher is extremely athletic, capable of near-impossible acrobatics and climbing techniques. He is also a master at stealth as well as close combat maneuvers, executing multiple targets simultaneously and with extraordinary skill.

According to another article by The Playlist, the upcoming film is currently developing a script for its planned 2017 release while its counterpart 'Assassin's Creed' starring Michael Fassbender in the back-to-back lead role as Callum Lynch and Aguilar is already in post-production.

'Splinter Cell' is an upcoming live-action adaptation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, a series of multi award-winning video games by developer Ubisoft. It is scheduled to be released sometime in 2017 and stars Tom Hardy in the lead role of Sam Fisher.
