The 68th Session of the U.N. General Assembly began in New York as many members of over 100 countries have converged for a week of diplomacy and dialogue in hopes of reaching important breakthroughs for some of the most important worldly issues.

The U.N. is an intergovernmental organization whose stated aims are to promote and facilitate global cooperation when it comes to international law, international security, economic development, human rights, political freedoms, democracy in hopes of lasting world peace.

Barack Obama spoke on Tuesday morning, delivering his fifth annual speech since becoming president.

World leaders are in meetings all week to discuss some of the most important issues of the day, including terrorism, sectarianism and regional instability. The Syrian civil war is considered this year most "urgent challenge" at the General Assembly.

The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, in hopes of ending wars between countries, mostly as a platform for dialogue. It has long been home to a host of subsidiary organizations, like UNICEF, to carry out ts mission of universal brotherhood.
