Mexico Bans Ortiz’s Music Video “Fuiste Mia” That Promotes Violence Against Women

Mexico is urging the media and social media sites to ban the circulation of grupero singer Gerardo Ortiz's music video that promotes violence against women.  Ortiz's video entitled "Fuiste Mia," that translates to "You Were Mine"  depicts a video that kills a woman.

Ortiz's music video became the center of Mexico government's ire because the video shows Ortiz shooting a man after finding him together with the former's girlfriend.  Ortiz shoots the man in the head while locking his girlfriend in a car's trunk.  Before Ortiz was arrested by the authorities the video showed the singer setting the car on fire, Yahoo reports. Ortiz's music video has gained more than 20 million viewers.

The Interior Department invited media outlets and the public "to avoid distributing material like this that trivializes and promotes violence against women."

Ortiz didn't comment on the issue surrounding his video, but his managers gave a press statement stating that the singer had no intention to impart a bad impression, according to Star Tribune.  Meanwhile, a separate petition from Change.Org is requesting to take down Ortiz's music video that promotes violence against women. A petition was signed by over 4,000 people.

Ortiz's music "has touched the combative spirit of the people, with different stories that come from people's daily reality, without ever having been an invitation to any kind of behavior in particular. The singer "doesn't try to do anything other than show a vision of everyday reality," the statement added.

As ABC News reports, Mexico found out that the policemen who appeared in Ortiz's music video were real officers.  The policemen used their own uniforms, cars and guns during the filming of the video.  Mayor Pablo Lemus Navarro of the Guadalajara suburb of Zapopan immediately took an action and dismissed the policemen from their posts.

Gruesome killing of women in Mexico still exists. Between 2005 and 2014, there were over 1,700 women who were murdered.  In one of the city, Ciudad Juarez, more than 100 women  were found raped, strangled and thrown in vacant lots or deserts.  As of this moment, Ortiz is not yet responding to any interviews about the video clip.
