Xiaomi Mi 5's 16-MP camera with 4-Axis image stabilization wins over iPhone 6s Plus' 2-Axis OIS

Xiaomi recently unveiled its flagship handset, Xiaomi Mi 5, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016. The Chinese tech giant showed off the smartphone's 4-axis image stabilization which is being compared tp that of iPhone 6s Plus' 2-axis OIS.

Android Central reported that the Xiaomi Mi 5 is one of the first handsets to feature the 4-axis optical image stabilization. This technology aims to reduce motion blur when shooting moving objects. The OIS on the Mi 5 delivers rotational axis as well as transversal OIS, which is particularly very useful during low-light conditions, and when capturing moving objects. The 4-axis OIS also offers better stabilization in vertical, horizontal and even rotational motion when compared with the 2-axis OIS on the iPhone 6s Plus.

The Mi 5 is the first to be armed with Sony's IMX298 imaging sensor, which comes with PDAF and DTI (Deep Trench Isolation) pixel-to-pixel isolation, together with Qualcomm's Spectra ISP.

BGR noted that during the Mi 5 launch keynote presentation, Xiaomi showed off a test the company had conducted to compare the video stabilization of Xiaomi Mi 5 against the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. Based on the video, all of the three smartphones are placed with video recording turned on. The assembly shakes while recording the video from the three handsets. The iPhone 6s that doesn't have OIS, so basically it has a lot of shake movements. The iPhone 6s Plus fares better but the Mi 5 offers the best performance with relatively little shake.

Aside from the impressive camera, Xiaomi Mi 5 features a 5.15-inch full HD display with extremely thin bezels and a fingerprint sensor on the front. It is powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor that is coupled with 4 GB of RAM. It has support for NFC, Qualcomm Quick Charge and is fuelled by a 3,000 mAh capacity battery. It also supports 4G+ - LTE Advanced with speeds of up to 600mbps if the carrier supports it, as well as VoLTE (Voice over LTE) for high quality calls.

The Mi 5 weighs in at an impressive 129 grams and sports a 3D glass body on the back panel. Users can choose a substitute of 3D ceramic back, which is more resistant and feels like marble without the weight.
Users will be able to juice up to 128GB of onboard flash storage on the Mi 5, though the company didn't specify the specific sizes available. Xiaomi's Mi 5 runs Android Marshmallow and the 7th iteration of the company's interface, MIUI.

Xiaomi Mi 5 is is expected to hit the market shelves of China on March 1.
