Bullied Boy Dies From Injuries After a School Fight, Bailey O'Neill Was 12

Family members say Bailey O'Neill died on Sunday morning, a day after he turned 12. The sixth-grader suffered a concussion, broken nose, and other injuries after a fight at Darby Township School on Jan. 10.

Doctors later put O'Neill in a medically induced coma after he began having seizures.

Southeast Delco School District Superintendent Stephen D. Butz said the school sends its condolences to the boy's friends and family. He said additional counselors are being made available for students and staff. Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan has been investigating what happened. Messages left for Mr. Whelan and the boy's family was not immediately returned.

After Bailey began having seizures, doctors at A.I. DuPont Hospital put him in a coma, The Huffington Post reported.

"The doctors say it is a blow to the head," Joy Fecanin, the boy's grandmother told the Delaware County Daily Times. Bailey's father said the boy who bullied his son was suspended for two days and police have not filed any criminal charges.

Bailey is a sixth-grader and honor student at Darby Township School. After the altercation, his parents took their son to the hospital in Wilmington where he was diagnosed with a concussion and later released. After the boy returned home, his father felt that something was not quite right with his son.

Southeast Delco School District Superintendent Stephen Butz told WPVI-TV that the district is concerned for Bailey but, "due to the age of the students involved and the ongoing police investigation, I am unable to make any additional comments." Butz reiterated to ABC News that the police are handling the incident.

"We take bullying seriously," he told ABCNews.com
