The 86-year-old particularly congratulated the athletes of the 2012 Olympics, which was hosted in London. "The success of these great festivals depended to an enormous degree upon the dedication and effort of an army of volunteers...All those who saw the achievement and courage at the Olympic and Paralympic Games were further inspired by the skill, dedication, training and teamwork of our athletes," as reported by Associated Foreign Press.

The Queen attended a Christmas morning service at the St Mary Magdalene Church.

Her grandson Prince William will be spending Christmas 2012 with his in-laws the Middleton's. The Duchess of Cambridge was delivered with her Christmas present earlier this year with news that she was pregnant with the royal heir.

On Monday, Dec. 3, the Buckingham Palace confirmed that Kate Middleton and Prince Williams were expecting a baby. This was the same day she was rushed to the hospital for hyperemesis gravidarum. She has since been released and is reportedly healthy.

An excerpt from the official statement on the royal website read as follows: "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby.... The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news."

The British Prime Minister, David Brown told BBC News, "It's absolutely wonderful news and I'm sure everyone around the country will be celebrating with them tonight...I was handed a note in a meeting. And I have to say, it was difficult to keep it a secret," as reported by ABC News.

The rumors of a pregnancy started as soon as the royal couple wed in April 2011, with the media constantly looking for signs of a pregnant Middleton. Now, less than a year after the couple tied the knot, the couple is expecting their first child, and the third great grandchild of the Queen of England.

The child will be the heir to the British Throne if the new legislation is approved, as reported by ABC News.
