'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Updates: Latest franchise overtook Avatar in domestic sales but not worldwide sales

By

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally surpassed Avatar's numbers with less than three weeks after its opening. The latest Star Wars film is now the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has earned about $90 million in the America over the last weekend for a total gross of a mind-boggling $742.2 million. It is also now ahead of Titanic for a second place on the all-time list, and nearly $20 million behind Avatar. Avatar was released on 2009 and grossed almost $750 million in its seventh-month run, then more than $10 million was added after it was rereleased in movie houses.

Lucasfilm and Disney's walloping-blockbuster outstripped the $760.5 million of James Cameron's Avatar. On Tuesday, The Force Awakens has grossed $8 million for a domestic total of $758.2 million. It is considered to be a very remarkable feat for the movie industry.

Because of the latest Star Wars film, domestic revenue for 2015 hit a record of $11 billion at the last minute. Hollywood Reporter said that the movie has broken numerous records such as fastest film to reach $700 million in 16 days, $600 million in 12 days, $500 million in 10 days, $300 million in five days, $200 million in three days, and $100 million in 24 hours. The Force Awakens now holds the title as the biggest global debut because of the $529 earnings and the biggest domestic opening which scored $249.9 million.

However, it is unlikely that J.J Abram's Star Wars will become the highest grossing film of all time. It has been reported that the film has a lesser sale in China and that it is behind Furious 7, which earned $391 million in ticket sales. The Force Awakens also lost its number one place at the box office to local language movie entitle Ip Man 3. Meanwhile in Australia, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still a long way off from becoming its highest-grossing film. It was reported that The Avengers made $54 million back in 2012 and $105 million for Avatar in 2009, while The Force Awakens only floats around $51 million.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is currently earning a very impressive $800 million in worldwide box-office. But it is still far from dethroning Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.
