Apple to release own OLED technology for iPhone 8

By

Apple is on the process of manufacturing its own OLED screen technology. It is believed that the technology will equip the upcoming iPhone 8. According to published reports, the company has established its laboratory to focus with the innovation.

Micro-OLED screen would feature smaller pixels than traditional LCD and LED-backlit displays, IB Times mentioned. Further, the technology provides many benefits such as improvement in color range and decrease in power consumption. These things would give way for Apple to create thinner iPhones and iPads.

According to DigiTimes, Apple has opened a laboratory in Longtan, Taiwan to be able to focus on the enhancement and production. The report said that the company may begin to produce such technology in 2017 or 2018 in accordance with its development. Such innovation is being linked to the new flagship of Apple, which is the iPhone 8.

As of the moment, Mac Rumors said that, while Apple's OLED technology is under development, the company will continue to lean on Samsung and LG Display which have been its primary suppliers. However, the report added that the new iPhone 7S shall still carry its current screen material.

On the other hand, LCD supplier, Japan Display, is in negotiations with Apple about securing OLED orders for future iPhones. Hitachi, Sony, and Toshiba also plan to begin its mass production of OLED panels in early 2018, related report said. KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, also stated in the report that Foxconn is preparing to invest in advanced TFT-LCD production lines for mass production in 2018. This may present tight competition between Apple and other rivals if the former firm decided to proceed with the launch few years from now.

Meanwhile, Apple did not release any official statement yet regarding its production in OLED technology. In the same way, the firm does not give out any information yet regarding its new flagship that will contain the new material.
