A Florida man is accused of whipping out a machete during a bizarre road rage incident with a female driver, local news outlets reported.

Police responded to a report of a road range incident in Estero on Dec. 16 to learn Phillip Mark Zmijewski, 33, had allegedly tailgated a woman and flashed his lights at her while following her for several blocks, WFLA reported.

At an intersection, Zmijewski reportedly grabbed a machete from his vehicle then walked toward the woman who told police she feared for her life, according to WFLA.

The man fled the scene but was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

"No driver should be in fear while on the road," Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in a statement obtained by WFLA. "Road Rage or violent exchanges of any kind won't be tolerated. My deputies are dedicated to protecting the residents of Lee County both on and off our streets."
