The 17-year-old female accused of carrying out a mass shooting at a Wisconsin Christian school died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports say.

A law enforcement source, speaking under the condition of anonymity, told CNN the unnamed teen girl appeared to die by suicide at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, after killing a teacher and student, and injuring six others with a 9 mm handgun Monday morning.

During an afternoon press conference, police only identified the shooter – who was found dead by responding officers – as a teen student. They would not clarify the suspect's age, gender, or manner of death.

"As difficult as today is – that's still someone's child that's gone," Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes told reporters, explaining his reasoning for keeping the shooter's identity withheld for the time being. "That's still someone that has to deal with what happened today."

Two people remain in critical condition and four people remain hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Barnes said the suspect's family has been cooperating with the investigation.

"I think we can all agree that enough is enough, and we have to come together to do everything we can to support our students to prevent press conferences like these from happening again and again and again," said Barnes.

Bethany Hyman, a mother whose children attend ALCS, told NBC News she "just bolted out" when she learned there was an active shooter on campus.

"Your world stops for a minute. Nothing else matters," Hyman said in a separate interview with USA TODAY.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., wrote on X, "I have been briefed on the active shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison and my heart goes out to all those impacted. My office is in touch with local and state officials, and I stand ready to assist law enforcement and anyone affected."

A post from Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., struck a different tone.

"Thoughts and prayers without action means more school shootings, more dead kids," he wrote. "More ACTION is needed by our elected officials. And more BACKBONE to stand up to gun manufacturers. This is uniquely a United States problem that doesn't have to happen."

Abundant Life Christian School is a K-12 school that serves about 390 students.

A motive remains under investigation.
