A preschool student in Georgia found a loaded gun in their backpack instead of a packed lunch, leading to school staff and law enforcement response.

The parent of the child unintentionally placed the gun in the child's backpack when their parent, unaware of the weapon after replacing it when the original one broke, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

On Monday morning, at the Emily Lembeck Early Learning Center, the child went looking for food and came across the weapon.

The child told the teacher who promptly removed the bag and called the Marietta Police Department. When officers arrived at the scene they found no intent to harm and no display of the weapon in the classroom.

"Based on their interviews with the child and parent in question, (Marietta Police Department) confirmed the child's normal school backpack was broken, and the parent hurriedly sent the child to school with a different bag today, not realizing the weapon was inside," Christine Ramirez, director of the school, wrote to MDJ online.

The incident is currently under investigation and it is not yet clear whether charges against the parent have been determined.
