The family of Jesse Peterson, who vanished after checking out of a California hospital in 2023, is suing for $5 million in damages after her body was discovered rotting in the very same hospital's morgue a year later.

Peterson, 31, checked into the Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael, California in April of 2023 seeking treatment for a diabetic episode she endured, related to her type-1 diabetes diagnosis, according to the lawsuit filed by the family.

Peterson's family were told that she was discharged after two days, against medical advice. Her family reported her missing to the Sacramento County Sheriff's office shortly after.

According to the lawsuit, detectives notified Peterson's family that her body was found at the very same hospital she disappeared from, stored in an "off-site warehouse morgue."

Her body was horribly decomposed, having sat there for "over a year", according to the complaint, which describes Peterson's body as "so decomposed that an open casket funeral was not feasible, and Jessie's fingerprints were not even obtainable for any keepsake."

Peterson's family is seeking $5 million in damages related to her death.
