House Committee Chair Intensifies Scrutiny on Shein's Data Security Measures, Connection with China

In an era where online data privacy and security are paramount, U.S.-based global fast-fashion retailer Shein is under intense scrutiny from an influential House committee. The concern? Their user data privacy practices and potential connection with the Chinese Communist Party.

Could Shein's Relationship with China Affect Data Privacy?

Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, a GOP chair of the prominent House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., who chairs the panel's subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce, issued a letter to Shein. The letter asked for more specific details regarding the data Shein collects from its users and any correspondence it has with the Chinese government.

The committee has expressed increased concern, as their investigations revealed that Chinese-based e-commerce sites have gained considerable popularity in the West. Such rapid growth, the committee argues, could potentially pose serious threats to consumer safety, e-commerce, and, more crucially, users' data privacy and security.

Notably, Shein isn't alone in receiving such inquiries. TikTok, Alibaba, and Temu were other companies that received similar letters.

Shein's Response and Further Scrutiny

Shein confirmed receipt of the letter and assured its dedication to responding, thereby validating the committee's concerns.

The letter further sought to establish Shein's acknowledgment of China's ongoing genocide in the Xinjiang region, primarily against the ethnic Uyghur group, and whether it can give definite assurance that its supply chain doesn't benefit from forced labor.

Despite the company insisting that its user data - held within Microsoft and Amazon's cloud services - is stored securely in the U.S., government officials remain concerned about potential mandatory surrenders of consumer data to the Chinese government due to the retailer's extensive supply chain based in China.
