Recently, a serious accident took place between a Tesla sedan and a fire truck. The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently announced that they are going to open an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. According to early reports, the Tesla vehicle might have been driving in some form of semi-autonomous mode at the time of the accident. For years, cars that drive themselves has been an active area of research. While countless accidents take place every year due to human error, most people do not yet think that autonomous driving cars are safe or reliable enough to replace the judgment of a human driver. This has increased the amount of attention paid to this collision.

Of note, this is not the first accident to take place involving a Tesla vehicle that might have been on some form of autopilot at the time of the accident. Even though California is a hotbed for new technology, particularly as it relates to cars, it is important for people to protect themselves. Tesla does have an autopilot feature that can handle some tasks related to the operation of a motor vehicle; however, it is still dangerous for drivers to take their hands off the wheel of the car. According to the local Fire Department of Culver City, CA, the Tesla was traveling at 65 miles per hour at the time of the accident. The driver of the accident reported that at the time of the accident, the car was in autopilot. The NTSB placed the fault for this accident at the feet of the Tesla. A separate accident took place several years ago involving a Tesla on autopilot that resulted in a fatality

Fortunately, in this accident, there were no injuries or fatalities reported. According to Glotzer and Leib, "According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the majority of those killed in large truck wrecks are people in passenger vehicles." This largely has to do with the sheer size of the vehicles involved. Trucks are simply so much larger than the vehicles with which they collide. This leaves everyone prone to suffering serious injuries; however, it places the people in the other vehicles at an even greater risk of being injured or killed. Just because truck drivers operate these large vehicles for a living doesn't mean they are going to do so safely. It is critical for everyone to operate with the utmost caution while on the road.

There are a handful of injuries that people often suffer when they are involved in a truck accident. Some of the most common injuries include traumatic brain injuries, bone fractures, and spinal cord injuries. Some of these injuries might even place someone in the hospital with a long-term recovery plan. This can be incredibly costly for everyone involved. It will be interesting to see what happens with this accident investigation. Without a doubt, something needs to be done to make sure all autopilot features are safe to use.
