Oakland Raiders may move their home stadium after officially filed paperwork to move to Las Vegas on Thursday, Jan.19. However, they intend to keep the logo and brand as “Raiders.”
According to Los Angeles Times, the team management has filed the application to the NFL to relocate to Las Vegas on Jan. 19. This will be a bold move, because the league has been avoiding the city for some time because Las Vegas is synonymous and associated with gambling.
In order to be able to relocate to the new city, the Raiders will have to obtain the approval from three-quarters of the league’s 32 owners. That means, Oakland Raiders must be able to secure 24 team owners to approve their changing the hometown. This March, as NFL will have its annual meetings, which the owners may vote for the Raiders relocation plan in the meeting.
The team has not planned to change the logo and brand as the “Raiders”after its relocation. In an interview with USA Today, the team spokesman Will Kiss stated that the management has not considered to rebrand its silver and black color scheme with famous raiders image.
“No rebranding is under consideration,” Kiss said on Friday Jan. 20.
Oakland Raiders was founded in 1960 with the black, gold and white as the team color. The team was a member of the American Footbal League (AFL) with Kezar Stadium San Francisco as their home stadium. After AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the Raiders competes in the AFC West Division of the NFL.
In 1982, the Raiders relocated to Los Angeles playing in the Los Angeles Coliseum. They stayed in Los Angeles for 12 years before moved back to Oakland in 1995. During their long-running term in the football landscape, the Raiders have won three Super Bowl in 1976, 1983 and 1983.
City of Oakland will try to persuade the team to stay in Oakland. The mayor of Oakland Libby Schaaf and the investment group which also includes former Raiders star Ronnie Lott believe the city of Oakland has something better to offer than Las Vegas.
