Transgender Man Sued a Long Beach Barbershop Due to "No Women" Policy

A transgender man is taking a legal action against a barbershop in California after he was denied to give him a haircut. The owner of the said barbershop's refusal to do the customer service was due to their policy that they don't serve women.

Rose Trevis filed the lawsuit in a court in Los Angeles on Tuesday, claiming he was told that women are not allowed to have their hair cut at the Hawleywood's Barber Shop in Long Beach, Yahoo News reported. The suit went on, saying the barbershop told him, the shop was an "old-school barber shop" and was told to go to salon.

However, Trevis insisted that he was a man. A barber responded to him, saying, "Like I said, we don't cut women's hair." Trevis told the shop's policy is discriminating, however, they said, they don't care and told him again saying "women are not even allowed in the shop," the suit claims.

According to NBC Los Angeles, the incident made him feel upset, discriminated, surprised and embarrassed. Trevis' lawsuit claims, the said barbershop allegedly said, they have a policy not to do women's haircut and has the right to "refuse services to anyone."

Haleywood's website reads, "One thing you won't see at Hawleywood's is women. You all know how distracting a woman can be and who wants a straight razor shave with a buxom blonde in the joint?" Fox 11 quoted.Gloria Allred, the representing attorney for Trevis said, they are also seeking the court to order the barbershop to change their policy and practice, which the lawyer calls, gender-based discrimination.

The incident allegedly occurred March 14th Friday at Hawleywood, in which their website describes the shop as a "real men's sanctuary". The said barbershop released a statement saying, they were not aware of the cited discrimination. They went on, they handle the accusations very seriously and will conduct an investigation regarding the alleged incident.
