Alabama Prison Uprising Update: Officers regain control over dorm, remains on lockdown

By

The officials of Alabama Department of Corrections have announced they have regained control over a prison dorm wherein inmates have caused disturbances. The prison dorm, however, remains to be on lockdown despite officials regaining control.

According to Fox News, this was the second uprising of the inmates in three days and the officials only regained control of the situation at around 2:45 P.M. on Monday. The prison dorm has been identified as that of the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore. The inmates that were responsible for the disturbances have been detained and were moved to segregation.

ABC 3340 said that on the second uprising, the dormitory was secured so there were no reported injuries. None of the officers or inmates were hurt in the disturbances. Bob Horton of the Alabama Department of Corrections, however, said that the lockdown is still in place to limit the movement of the inmates inside the prison. Visitations have been cancelled temporarily and it remains unclear when the lockdown will be lifted.

Horton added that the second uprising took place when officers tried to apprehend a prisoner, who is suspected of stabbing another inmate during the first uprising, ABC News reported. The violence in the William C. Holman Correctional Facility originally started on Friday night.

Inmates were able to stab a prison warden and a corrections officer as well as lit fires as they tried to control their section of the prison dormitory. There were 70 inmates inside the prison dorm but it was unclear how many were participating in the uprising.

Officials were able to find 30 cell phones, makeshift knives, and other contraband after the first uprising.

A Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has also been called to remain at the prison in order to assist corrections officers to maintain the order in the area.
