‘The Expendables 4’: Production begins this year for 2017 release; WWE Stone Cold Steve Austin rumored as main villain

'The Expendables 4' is an upcoming action-adventure film intended as the follow-up to 2014's 'The Expendables 3'. Terry Crews admitted that he would return to the franchise only if Sylvester Stallone will do the same. Famous wrestlers may join the new cast of characters.

During an interview with Collider at the recent VES Awards, Crews admitted that he would return should Stallone be back for the fourth installment of 'The Expendables' franchise. Crews was promoting his television show 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' when he revealed that his decision to rejoin the cast would depend of Stallone's.

He said, "He's got a lot more choices now. My thing is, really, whether he wants to do it or not. Because if he wants to do it, I'm in, like, there's no stopping me. It's really up to Sly, because this is his baby, his creation, and if he wants to do another one, I'm in."

The ensemble action films, created to pay homage to blockbuster action films from the 80s and 90s, was written by Stallone and created by David Callaham. The first film in the series was released in 2010 and spawned two other sequels released in 2012 and 2014. The films have been massive box office successes despite mixed reviews from critics.

According to /Film, Crews believed that plans could change for 'Expendables 4' since his nomination at the Academy Awards for his role on Ryan Coogler's 'Creed', which could open up infinite possibilities for his career. He said, "I have to say, with Sly, I think it looks like he's going to get an Oscar... It's a matter of whether he'll be in it. If he got the Golden Globe, he got the Oscar, there's a lot more things that are going to be offered to him, but if Sly is in it, I'm in."

Crews plays Hale Caesar in the action franchise. He was able to land the role after Wesley Snipes was unavailable for the first film. The 47-year old footballer-turned-actor is best known is best known for his Old Spice commercials as well as comedy gigs in television and film including 'White Chicks', 'Idiocracy' and 'Everybody Hates Chris'.

Meanwhile, it had been speculated that several famous wrestlers will be joining the new cast for the upcoming fourth film. According to Movie News Guide, Stone Cold Steve Austin of the WWE franchise will be featured as the film's main villain. Hulk Hogan will also be joining the cast as a rumored replacement for Stallone should the latter drop out of the project.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is also attached to play another villain in 'The Expendables 4' but this has not been confirmed as of the present. Ronda Rousey, UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion, may also join her fellow wrestlers on-screen.

'The Expendables 4' is an upcoming action film intended as the follow-up to 2014's 'The Expendables 3'. It is expected to begin production this year in time for the scheduled release in 2017.
