Syrian Death Toll Tops 100,000; U.N. Security General Announces New Number of Casualties in Civil War; Meets with Secretary of State John Kerry (Video)

U.N. Secretary-General B Ki-Moon raised the death toll in Syria's civil war surpassing 100,000 up from nearly 93,000 just over a month ago, the Associated Press reported. Ban called on the Syrian government and opposition to halt the violence in the 2 ½ civil war, saying it is "imperative to have a peace conference in Geneva as soon as possible."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Ban Ki Moon on Thursday. "There is no military solution to Syria. There is only a political solution, and that will require leadership in order to bring people to the table," Kerry said.

The United States and Russia, meanwhile have been trying to convene an international conference in Geneva, along with the United Nations to try to agree on a transitional government based on a plan adopted in that city a year ago.

It was also reported urther 1.7 million Syrians have been forced to seek shelter in neighboring countries.The UN announcement came as reports from the capital, Damascus, said that seven people had been killed in a car bomb attack.Syrian state media said the attack took place in the suburb of Jaramana, the AP Also reported.

"The military and violent actions must be stopped by both parties and it is thus imperative to have a peace conference in Geneva as soon as possible," Ban added.
