Jonas Cuaron is recently hired to direct the new upcoming futuristic take of the story of Zorro. The upcoming film, simply entitled "Z", will begin filming this summer. It will be released from Lantica Media and Sobini Films.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Alfonso Cuaron's son, Jonas Cuaron, has been tapped to direct "Z" which will be the third film to be released about the mythical masked hero of peasants. Principal photography is expected to begin this summer in Pinewood Dominical Republic Studios.

Financing and production for "Z" will be through Lantica Media headed by CEO Antonio Gennari while Sobini Films' CEO Mark Amin will produce the upcoming project. Lantica Media's CEO said that they are looking forward to making the film an actuality with Cuaron.

"We are very fortunate to have Jonás on this film. His love for cinema is evident in his work and he is very talented in his ability to tell a compelling story. We look forward to seeing where his vision will take us., Gennari said as reported by Yibada.

Furthermore, Sobini Films' Mr. Amin said that it was Cuaron's skills as a director that caught their eyes and sealed him to the project. "When I saw Desierto, I was impressed with Jonás's command of action and suspense, his great visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors", Amin said.

Plot details for the project are currently under wraps but per Flickering Myth, it was briefly explained as a "post-apocalyptic take on the myth of Zorro...set in the near future but keeps the idea of a masked and caped stranger taking on tyrants."

Cuaron previously received recognition for his work in "Disierto" which won the International Critics Award during the Toronto Film Festival. He also worked with his father for the movie "Gravity" which they both co-wrote.
