Robert Durst update: Guilty to gun charges, to face possible murder trial

By

Robert Durst was back in court last Wednesday as he pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in New Orleans. He also agreed of a prison sentence for 85 months, which could lead him to being arrested for murder charges.

According to Mashable, US District Judge Kurt Engelhardt stated that he temporarily accepts the plea of 'The Jinx' actor. He added that he will make an ultimate decision after receiving a pre-sentencing report expected to arrive after two weeks.

The New York real estate heir was dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit while being handcuffed as he appeared in the court, admitting that he illegally carried a .38-caliber revolver when he was arrested last at a New Orleans hotel. At that time, FBI agents feared that he would be fleeing the country. Aside from finding a weapon, authorities also discovered cash worth $117,000, to which he will be forfeiting under the plea deal.

Apparently, this is not the only case that Durst is facing. He has also been convicted for charges of killing a friend and a onetime spokeswoman, Susan Berman, in 2000. However, he waived his extradition to California, making him stay in Louisiana, Star Telegram reported.

As for his lawyer, Richard DeGuerin, he believes that his client is innocent of killing Berman and has idea who did it, The Guardian stated. "What we're doing and have been trying to do from the start is get Bob Durst to Los Angeles," he said.

It appears that there is a deal to get Durst back to California in order to face trial regarding Berman's death. In addition, Assistant US Attorney Michael McMahon stated that if Engelhardt accepts the plea, Los Angeles prosecutors will arraign Durst on August 18.

However, McMahon added that the plea bargain will be invalidated if the judge decides to give Durst a different sentence. The HBO documentary star could have faced a maximum penalty of 10 year-imprisonment and a fine worth $250,000.
