U.S. Police hikes up anti-DUI efforts for Super Bowl Sunday

By

As the entire U.S. prepares for the upcoming Super Bowl 50, law enforcers across various states are also ramping up their efforts against drunk drivers in preparation for the event. These include more checkpoints and frequent patrols in different regions of the country.

One of these states is Wisconsin. According to officials, the state's police departments plan to increase their checkpoints within the different counties. At these stops, law enforcers will carry out tests to motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, WBAY.com reported.

Joining Wisconsin is Illinois. According to a police official from Montgomery in the state's Kendall County, the law enforcers who will be deployed this weekend for the Super Bowl event will show zero tolerance to those who will violate the drunk-driving regulation, Kendall County Now has learned.

Authorities in Pennsylvania's Berks County, on the other hand, have started urging residents to be extra safe and responsible when planning their Super Bowl parties and gatherings this weekend. Specifically, officials said that people should have back-up plans that will prevent them from having to drive in case they get drunk, Reading Eagle reported.

Officials from the different states noted that if sports fans plan to drink this weekend while enjoying Super Bowl 50, they should at least have an appointed sober designated driver who can take them home safely. The public is also advised to call 911 or report to authorities if they see drivers who appear drunk or if a car is travelling erratically.

According to a 2014 report by the National Highway Transportation Authority Safety Administration, over 9,900 individuals in the U.S. were killed two years ago due to DUI-related incidents. This is the main reason why the agency launched the "Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk" initiative for the upcoming event.

As for one of the most anticipated sporting event in the country, Super Bowl 50, which will feature the championship game between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos, will happen on Feb. 7. It will be held at the Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
