Atlanta School Shooting: 14-Year-Old Hospitalized After Shot in The Face

By

A 14-year-old student was hospitalized Thursday after being shot in the head at an Atlanta middle school, authorities have reported.

A teacher also sustained minor injuries, and was treated at Price Middle School, in south Atlanta. The school was placed on lockdown earlier in the day, but authorities also report that all remaining students are safe.

During a news conference, Atlanta Fire Capt. Marian McDaniel indicated the shooting victim was taken to Grady Hospital, and no immediate information was given on the student's condition.

Atlanta Police Department spokesman Carlos Campos told reporters that the victim was "alert, conscious and breathing" when he was taken to a local hospital.

"Everything is [now] secure," Campos told reporters at the scene.

A fire department spokeswoman said the teacher who suffered minor injuries during the incident was treated at the scene. Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis said at a news conference that "all other students are safe."

Police told reporters at the school that one male student was taken into custody, but details of the shooting are still pending.

The gun control debate has lately inundated news headlines in the United States since the shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school in December.
