New data privacy legislation limits use of student data in California

By

Technology companies in California are welcoming the New Year with some adjustments. The new California law limits the student information and other data that will be gathered. The said data privacy statute constrains operators and in-charge of education websites, web and other system applications, and online services to use student data often use in advertising.

Governor Jerry Brown originally signed and made the data privacy legislation into law in the year 2014, but it was  officially made effective only on January 1, 2016, US News said in a report. The said law requires all education technology companies to protect and control reasonable security procedures regarding students' personal information. allowing the deletion of these data upon the request of the school.

According to Santa Cruz Sentinel, California is considering to provide the best form of security for its students as they welcome the new law this 2016. Protecting privacy rights will bar other companies to make profit out of students' personal information. Under this law, companies are solely responsible and in-charge in securing and protecting students' data from elementary and high school. This can only be used by the school and  for other academic purposes.

The law that was signed and considered to  impose privacy and security for the students is by far, one of the most aggressive legislative effort to protect students' personal data.

For U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, this duly signed legislation will keep the kids safe, saying "privacy rules may well be the seatbelt of this generation." She expressed her support and belief for this new legislation during an education technology summit held months before the new California privacy law was signed.

The new student privacy law will provide rules for companies especially in time with the K-12 program - as educational institutions proceed on the intense usage of technology by integrating laptops, mobile gadgets, tablets, and utilization of educational software for the students.
