'Star Trek Beyond' recently released its newest trailer and drew in some mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. Co-writer and actor Simon Pegg admitted that he wasn't a fan of the teaser either but reassured audiences to be "patient".
According to Sciencefiction.com, the new trailer for director Justin Lin's take on the latest installment in the Star Trek cinematic franchise recently dropped drawing mixed criticism from fans. It was released before the debut of J.J. Abrams' 'Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens' after the filmmaker departed the popular science fiction franchise for the George Lucas favorite. Abrams directed and produced 2009's 'Star Trek' reboot and is only set to return as producer for the upcoming film.
Lin admitted that his mission for the thirteenth film in the franchise involved some "deconstruction". He said, "At its core I felt that on this chapter if we could deconstruct Trek and then reaffirm why it's great, maybe send it off and it'll have a long run after this, that to me in a more cerebral sense was the mission on this one."
Although the official trailer drew flak from some of the franchise's loyal fans - with some comparing it to Lin's work in 'Furious 7 - co-writer Simon Pegg reassured audiences that the trailer is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the Guardian, Pegg told a reported from Hey U Guys that there was more to the story than the teaser provided.
He said, "I didn't love it, because I know there's a lot more to the film... There's a lot more story and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more, what I would call 'Star Trek stuff'... To the Star Trek fans I'd say 'Hang in there. Be patient'". The 45-year old English actor and comedian is set to reprise his role as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott as well as co-writer in the new film.
The official trailer featured the returning ensemble cast of Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Zoe Saldana as Lt. Nyota Uhura. It also introduced the first look at Idris Elba's Krall as well as Sofia Boutella's Jaylah.
According to Moviepilot, 'Star Trek Beyond' will revisit the original series' exploration of alien worlds as well as discuss philosophical and social themes despite not being apparent in the new trailer.
'Star Trek Beyond' is an upcoming science-fiction adventure film intended as the thirteenth film in the cinematic series. It is scheduled to be released on July 22, 2016. It is directed by Justin Lin based on the screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.
