A Lionel Messi-led Argentina won its very intense match against the mighty Swiss on Tuesday, which no doubt sent fans celebrating, including its biggest fan, Pope Francis.

The Associated Press said that on the Vatican's social communications office Twitter feed, a cartoon was posted showing the Argentine-born pontiff wearing a blue and white Argentina scarf over his signature white cassock, as he watches on glumly while a pair of Swiss Guards drinking beer watch the live match on television. The cartoon had a header that read, "Argentina vs Switzerland :)"

The cartoon poked fun at what could be a dilemma for the football-loving pope, who is a card-carrying member and a lifelong fan of Argentine club San Lorenzo. Pope Francis has reportedly sworn to be neutral throughout the World Cup, AP said.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that Pope Francis might do a little jig after the Argentinians won the significant match. Their 1-0 win now helped them advance to the quarterfinals, and closer to the World Cup championship.

Switzerland no doubt gave it their all to ensure Argentina would not be able to take control of the field. However, the Argentinians would have to thank their goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who managed to thwart several solids from the Swiss. At the end of the scoreless first half, it appeared that the Switzerland had all the best chances to score a goal, even though EthnicMedia360 Sports said that Argentina clocked in 60% ball possession.

Argentina was much stronger in the second half, Buzzfeed said, and Swiss goalkeeper Diego Benaglio appeared to be feeling the pressure, but managed to make some spectacular saves.

In the second extra period, Angel Di Maria attempts to score a goal via a penalty kick, but is denied by Benaglio.
