Supervisors in Siskiyou County in California where residents are fed up with a lack of representation and over-regulation have (perhaps symbolically) voted in favor of seceding from the rest of the state, the Associated Press reported.

The Siskyou Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 on Tuesday for the declared "secession," as supporters said that the move would restore local control over decision-making. Their hope is for other rural counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon to join them in a creation of a new state called the State of Jefferson.

"Many proposed laws are unconstitutional and deny us our God-given rights, one member of Happy Camp said at a city meeting. "We need our state so we can make laws that fit our way of life." 100 others joined the meeting, and many were in support of the declaration of secession.

The movement became popular, especially in Siskiyou County, where residents have long felt that their concerns are overshadowed by more populated parts of California, the AP also reported.

Voters in some Colorado counties have also expressed an interest in secession, as the issue is on the ballot in at least three counties, the AP reported.
