South African authorities have reportedly concluded their investigation into the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp, the slain girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius, who will be served with an indictment early next week, The Chicago Tribune reported. Pistorius faces allegations that he deliberately shot and killed Steenkamp at his home this year on Valentine's Day.

Pistorius claimed he accidentally shot the young model, mistaking her for an intruder in the early morning hours. Reports suggested that they were arguing at the time of the shooting. If convicted, Pistorius could face 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder. It was revealed a few months ago that police had been called to Pistorius' residence two hours before the shooting because neighbors complained of hearing a loud argument. South African media reported that he shot her four times through a bathroom door. Police said investigators recovered a 9mm pistol from his home. 

The Olympian is due back in court August 19, the day on which Steenkamp would have celebrated her 30th birthday, the Associated Press reported.

The trial is likely to only start early next year as the matter will be transferred to the North Gauteng High Court and the clerk of the court first has to find an opening in the court roll, the AP reported. South Africa does not have a jury system; a judge, most likely assisted by two court appointed assessors, will determine Pistorius' guilt or innocence.

Pistorius is out on a million rand bail.
