One person was killed and four others seriously injured when an S.V.V. being the wrong way on Manhattan's Tappan Zee Bridge crashed head-on into another vehicle, which set off a pile up at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening, The New York Times reported.

The 69-year-old S.U.V. driver Michael Schechel was seen heading south in the northbound lane when his vehicle crashed into a Nissan driven by 57-year-old Newman Ayeh Brachie. The crash caused the Nissan to roll over several times before coming to a rest in the middle of the road, New York police said.

Ayeh-Brachie, a 56-tear-old passenger in the Nissan, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Rockland County medical examiner, news reports said. The driver of the Nissan, from Hillcrest, New York was taken to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.

Schechel and a passenger in his car were also taken to area hospitals.

No arrests were made after the crash, but the police said the investigation was ongoing.

The Tappan Zee Bridge carries the New York State Thruway over the Hudson River between Rockland and Westchester Counties, north of New York City. .

It took several hours to clear the cars and debris and reopen the bridge, local New York broadcasts reported.
