Mozzarella Recall: Formaggio Italian Cheese Specialtues Recalls Cheese in New York, New Jersey for Potential Allergen Soy

By

A mozzarella recall has been issued by Mongello Italian Cheese Specialties of Hurleyville, New York due to "mis-branding and an undeclared allergen soy, which was not declared on the on the label," the Associated Press reported.

Formaggio Italian Cheese Specialties said the recall contains about 234 point of fresh mozzarella with chorizo and cilantro products sold in New York and New Jersey.

"The problem was discovered by FSIS during a recent Food Safety Assessment. The problem occurred when the company changed chorizo suppliers. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of this product. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a health-care provider."

The company explained the recall stemmed from a switch in chorizo suppliers, news reports said.

The decision to discontinue the mozzarella with soy comes after another recent cheese product recall. The Nestle Pizza Company recalled its DiGiorno and California Pizza Kitchen brand Frozen pizza products because they contained shards of plastic, the Today News Gazette reported.

People with soy allergies can potentially suffer allergies, like itching, hives, wheezing, abdominal pain, nausea and anaphylactic shock after eating something with it.

The risk is high for those with soy allergies, and severe reaction could result if the product is consumed by an allergic consumer without knowledge of the soy contamination.
