An 81-year-old nun has been charged with hit and run after she was accused of getting in a car accident then driving away. She is set to face up to a year behind bars if proven guilty.

In a report by ABC News, the car accident took place in a New Hampshire department store parking lot. The nun has been identified as Sister Rachel Dumont. She has been charged with conduct after an accident, a misdemeanor that is punishable by up to a year in jail upon conviction. 

Accordingly, Dumont struck a vehicle last December 16 in a Kohl's store parking lot located in Plaistow, New Hampshire at around 12:55 P.M. The drivers were not hurt or injured during the car accident but there was little damage to the vehicles.

Police officials said that when the driver of the other car involved in the car accident got out to try and exchange information, Dumont did not give away details and drove away, Daily Journal shared.

The woman from the other car was able to write down the license plate number of Dumont and give police officials the description of the teal car that the nun was driving at the time of the incident.

The nun turned herself in to police just this Tuesday, February 2. She surrendered after police officials issued a warrant last January 20, Plaistow Police Chief Kathleen Jones said. However, she has been released after posting a $1,000 personal recognizance bail.

She is set to be arraigned this April 4, NECN reported.

Before she was tracked down, Master Patrol Officer Dorothy McGurren said that she has been having a difficult time pursuing the nun as she was uncooperative. There have been, however, no details provided on how many times they attempted to serve the warrant.

The nun could not be reached for a comment and it is also unclear if she has an attorney.
