The premiere episode of "Call the Midwife" Season 5 has received positive remarks from the fans and viewers alike. According to OK! Magazine, the show received praises for handling the storyline which focuses on the Thalidomide scandal in the 1950's. The said episode has garnered an healthy average of 8 million viewers.

As for the official plot synopsis of episode 4 BBC UK notes, "As the medical world changes, so is the society, with opportunities in education increasingly open to all. Despite his working background, Ian is overjoyed to be accepted into university and embraces his chance to escape Poplar, much to the disappointment of his traditional mother Sadie. But his plans are ruined when girlfriend Linda falls pregnant. Trixie and Tom help the family, which begins to break apart due to this unplanned pregnancy."
