A man fatally shot another man, then killed himself at a day care center in Gatineau, Quebec on Friday, the Associated Press reported.

All 53 children were safe and were unharmed. Police would not say whether any had witnessed the killings, Gatineau Police Chief Mario Haren said.

"We have two deceased. One of the males is responsible for this shooting. The other male works at this day care center. Right now we're investigating that this was related to a recent separation between a couple," Haren later said in a press conference

The shooting happened at two houses, which serve as a day care center. The facilities are also across the street from a hospital, Sergeant Jean-Paul LeMay added.

"It was horrible," Omar Eltlawi said to the AP, fearing for his three-year-old- daughter Zain. "You see these things on the news and you don't expect it to happen to you."

A sad scene played out as visibly shaken parents sobbed and hugged while they waited for investigators to bring them to their children.

Haren said police received a call about an armed man with a shotgun threatening people. They arrived to find the man dead with a shotgun beside him and a second, unidentified employee of the day care, also dead.

In 2006, a shooting at Dawson College,located near downtown Montreal Quebec, was another crime event to hit the province. In that case, the shooter killed one, while injuring another 19. The shooter later committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in that instance, after being shot in the arm by a police officer.
