Alabama Chief Justice Orders to Stop Issuing Marriage Licenses To Same-Sex Couples Despite US Supreme Court Ruling

By

Alabama Supreme Court ordered on Wednesday to the state probe judges to stop giving marriage licenses to gay couples. Ray Moore said the judges should follow his order and remain under the court order.

Moore said he acted and made the decision because there was "confusion" created after different decision was made. January last year the conservative judges requested to ban same-sex marriage in the state. In March, a Supreme Court order banned same-sex marriage in Alabama but after approximately some months, a federal judge banned that order and prohibited probate judges in denying license. In June, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Same-sex marriage be legal to the whole country. The decision of Alabama's Supreme Court Justice would probably be just short lived as reported by NBC News.

Alabama has 67 counties and only nine counties have refused to issue marriage license and that is to all couples said by the The Guardian. Moore is the one that's complicating the issue, said by the director of ACLU of Alabama Susan Watson. A Democrat from Birmingham and the only openly gay member of the Alabama Legislature, Rep Patricia Todd, said Moore will only lose when he's challenge with his decision and should get over it because it is done. The US Supreme Court naturally overruled the state Supreme Court March injunction said University of Alabama School of Law professor Ronald Krotoszynski.

It was reported by Reuters that Moore's order would likely be ignored. Moore, a Republican, is openly against gay marriage. Moore wrote in his statement, "This disparity affects the administration of justice in this state." it was stated by him that it is better to not issue marriage license to gay and lesbian couples until the law is clear.

In 2003, Moore was removed in his office because a federal judge stated that he was acting above the law. In 2012, he was back in the office after saying he would not repeat it.
