CBS provided the new year's first major entertainment shocker when it announced on Tuesday that Michael Weatherly is leaving after "NCIS" Season 13. Actor was sentenced to 3 years probation.

"After 13 years on NCIS, Michael Weatherly is leaving the show at the end of this season," CBS said in a statement reports The Hollywood Reporter. "He is a valued part of the CBS family, and the immense charm and talent he brings to the screen as 'Very' Special Agent Tony DiNozzo has helped make NCIS what it is today - the No. 1 drama in the world." The network also thanked him for all his contributions to the success of the series.

Weatherly himself confirmed his departure on Twitter with the post, "DiNozzo is a wonderful, quixotic character & I couldn't have had more fun playing him over the past 13 seasons. Les Moonves & CBS gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. I will miss the amazing crew & cast, who are like family to me, & to the fans all over the world - THANK YOU, it's been a fantastic ride!"

The news comes just four days after Weatherly pleaded no contest to driving under the influence (DUI) charge from his November arrest reports Fox News. He was detained by LA police officers after his blood alcohol level was found to be higher than the legal limit of .08.

Weatherly was sentenced to three years probation. He must also complete a three-month alcohol program and a Mothers Against Drunk Driving program.

Weatherly is the second lead star to leave "NCIS" after Cote de Pablo left after Season 11 reports TV.Com. CBS CEO LesMoonves revealed at that time that the network offered her a lot of money and did everything it could to keep her from leaving. De Pablo went on to co-star on the network's limited series The Dovekeepers.

Just like her, Weatherly will continue to be involved with the network. The actor-producer has a development deal with studio counterpart CBS Television Studios.

Michael Weatherly will certainly be missed by "NCIS" fans as he served the perfect foil for the more serious Mark Harmon. What can you say about this latest development? Tell us your thoughts in the section below.
