A Mississippi mother allegedly backed out of a tragic "suicide pact" with her 10-year-old daughter, allowing the young girl to overdose on pills alone before fleeing, according to police.

Brittney Leigh Hensley, 37, was arrested in Huntsville, Alabama, two months after a felony warrant for her arrest was issued in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, in September.

The charges stem from an incident in July when Hensley reportedly fled the scene after police responded to a medical emergency at the Studio 6 motel in Ocean Springs, where she and her daughter had been residing, according to Super Talk Mississippi.

"She had this suicide pact with her daughter, and the daughter took the pills, but [Hensley] didn't," revealed Ocean Springs Police Chief Ryan Lemaire. "So, the momma started freaking out when her daughter didn't wake up,"

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment following the overdose. After regaining consciousness, she informed police about the pact her mother had made with her, adding that Hensley hadn't followed through on the agreement, Super Talk went on to report.

Hensley then reportedly left town before her scheduled interview with investigators and Child Protection Services.

Following her disappearance, Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers issued a public alert to help locate her. Authorities eventually traced Hensley to Alabama, where she was staying with family members.

After her October 15 arrest, Hensley was extradited to Mississippi and is currently held at the Jackson County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
